In his own words:
Short & Curvy is a place where I want to provide readers with additional, supplemental material for their reading enjoyment. Not every story may be for everyone. That’s why I called it Short & Curvy. These are primarily short stories, and they may be about any subject in any genre.
Think of it as a drive on a sunny afternoon in an open topped convertible. Around every curve, around every bend, and there are plenty of them, is something new, different and perhaps unexpected. While they will primarily be short stories, there may also be the occasional review or essay.
I hope you will enjoy this section of my website. There will always be a backstory paragraph explaining the nature or origin of the story and a little preview to help see if it’s something you might like. Read one or read them all. It’s up to you. If you should read an entry, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. Please do not hesitate to contact me!
This is a story about how fate, circumstances, whatever you wish to call it, can take a hand in your life and set off a course of events from which you will never again be the same.
In a longer work of fiction, there is generally a premise, an execution, and a resolution. There is an answer to a question. In a short story, there are often times more questions than answers. This is one of those!
This is the story of an ordinary working man who’s just trying to get his job done, make a living, and have a life. Things aren’t really going that well for him and then one day fate takes a hand and things will never quite be the same again.
The following is a brief essay, more like a thought process, on how a written story is constructed. What is read depends on what is written. What is written depends on the story to be told. While that sounds completely circular, read it, and see what you think.
This is a story about my dog, Isabella. She was a rescue dog that my mother adopted in what turned out to be the last year of my mother’s life. I then inherited the dog. She was really shy and had never been outdoors. She continued as an inside dog, but I introduced her to walking in the outside world. Now we go out three times a day. Isabella is much more social, although she is still very attentive and will probably always be a cautious dog. With that in mind, it took her awhile before she told me her story. I’d like to share it with you.
The next day in science class, Nick was introduced to Einstein’s theory of general relativity. He didn’t remember it from before. The gist of it was that Einstein thought gravity could bend time.
This story came to me in a series of dreams. I was writing down fragments of different ones and all the pieces started to fit together. It feels a little like an episode of the old Twilight Zone TV series. It’s about a man who is given a second chance.
I was contacted in early 2020 regarding an anthology revolving around the resourcefulness of Nashville and Nashvillians. Regrettably, the year turned worse the further it progressed, and the idea had to be abandoned, at least in the short term. I had written this story for that anthology. It was intended to reflect the spirit of Nashville, as shown thru the floods and the tornado, and maybe the quarantine. The story was to be based upon hope, faith, survival, helpfulness, brotherhood, resilience, or perseverance. The theme was something lost, but not completely, and regained thru belief.
